Resume for Freshers With No Experience: 2026 ATS Guide

No job title to list? Here is the exact project rewrite formula, skills list, and section order that gets 2026 freshers past ATS filters at TCS and Infosys.

The panic is normal. The blank "Experience" section is the actual problem

Every campus placement season, thousands of final-year students open a resume template and freeze at the same line: Work Experience. They have none, so they either leave it blank, write "N/A," or delete the section entirely.

None of those three options are the real fix. An ATS does not penalize you for being a fresher—every parser handles thousands of entry-level resumes daily. What it does penalize is a resume with no parseable content under a recognized section header, because that section then contributes zero keyword matches to your score.

You are not missing experience. You are missing the habit of writing your final-year project, internship, or coursework like it belongs in that section.

Reframe your final-year project like a job, not a submission

Most fresher resumes describe a project the way a professor wants to read it: "Developed a machine learning model to predict student performance using Python." That sentence has zero measurable outcome and no tool stack a recruiter can search for.

Apply the same X-Y-Z structure used for experienced hires: what you built, what it moved, and how you built it.

  • Weak: "Built a college attendance management system as a final year project."
  • Strong: "Built a role-based attendance tracker for 400+ students using React, Node.js, and MongoDB, cutting manual roll-call time from 8 minutes to under 1 minute per class."
  • Weak: "Made a chatbot using Python for my minor project."
  • Strong: "Built a FAQ chatbot for a mock e-commerce site using Python and the OpenAI API, handling 15 intent categories with 90% correct response routing in testing."

Cut the fluff skills list — it is actively hurting you

Almost every fresher resume has some version of this line: "MS Office, Internet Surfing, C, C++, Java, Good Communication Skills." A parser reads that as noise, and a recruiter reads it as a resume that has not been updated since 2015.

List only what you can defend in an interview, grouped the way a job description groups them: Languages (Python, Java, SQL), Frameworks/Libraries (React, Node.js, Pandas), Tools (Git, Postman, VS Code, Figma if relevant), and any certification with an issuing body and date.

A six-week internship is still worth two strong bullets

Do not undersell a short internship because the duration feels small. Recruiters read internship bullets the same way they read job bullets — for tools used and outcome delivered, not for tenure.

  • Instead of "Worked as an intern on the backend team," write: "Fixed 12 API bugs and added input validation to 3 endpoints during a 6-week backend internship using Node.js and Express, reducing reported form-submission errors by half."
  • If you had no formal internship, list any freelance, volunteer, or open-source contribution with the same bullet discipline — a merged pull request counts.

Section order for a fresher is different from an experienced resume

Experienced resumes lead with Work Experience. A fresher resume should lead with what actually has the most substance: Education (with CGPA/percentage if above 7.0/70%), Projects, Skills, then Internships and Certifications, in that order — followed by extracurriculars only if space allows.

Do not add a photo, a "career objective" paragraph, or a two-column layout with a skills sidebar. These are the exact formatting choices that scramble text order inside a parser and drop you into the unparseable pile before a human ever opens the file.

Test it before the placement drive, not after rejection

The gap between a fresher resume that gets shortlisted and one that gets silently filtered out is almost always the project bullets and the skills list — not a lack of talent.

Paste a real internship or campus JD into Career Copilot's free ATS score checker against your draft resume before the placement cell deadline. Fix what is missing while you still have time to add a project or certification, not the night before applications close.
