Notice Period Negotiation in India: Cut 90 Days Fast
Buyout clauses, handover speed, and the right script for your manager — how to actually shorten a 90-day notice period at TCS, Infosys, or Wipro.
Read your appointment letter before you say a word to anyone
Most large Indian IT employers — TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Accenture — write a 60 to 90 day notice period into the appointment letter, and a separate buyout clause that lets you pay your way out of the remaining days.
Before any conversation with your manager or HR, find that clause. It usually states a formula: basic salary (or full CTC, depending on company policy) divided by 30, multiplied by the number of remaining notice days. Knowing this number before you negotiate turns the conversation from "please let me go early" into "here is what I am prepared to pay."
The three levers that actually shorten a notice period
Ignore generic advice like "just ask nicely." Three concrete levers move the date: money (buyout), speed (handover completed early), and relationship (a manager willing to approve an exception).
- Buyout: offering to pay the remaining notice days out of pocket is the fastest lever, and most policies allow a partial buyout — say, reducing 90 days to 45 by paying for the other 45.
- Handover speed: if you document your ongoing work, hand off credentials, and train a backup within the first two weeks of notice, you remove your manager's main objection to releasing you early — that no one else can pick up the work.
- Manager relationship: a manager who has no exception-approval incentive will slow-walk you. A manager who trusts you will escalate the request on your behalf if you ask directly instead of routing everything through the HR portal first.
What to actually say to your manager
Do not open with "I need to leave early." Open with the constraint, then the offer.
- Script: "My new offer needs me to join by [date], which is about [X] days before my notice period ends. I can complete a full handover on [current project] by [specific date] and I am open to a partial buyout for the remaining days. Can we work out something that does not leave your team stuck?"
- This framing gives your manager a concrete handover date and a financial offer in the same sentence — both of the real objections, answered before they are raised.
When HR says "no exceptions, policy is policy"
HR's default answer will almost always be a firm no on the first pass, because approving early releases individually invites more requests. This is not the final answer — it is the standard opening position.
Submit the buyout request formally through your HRMS/ESS portal in writing, cc your manager, and reference the exact clause number from your appointment letter. A written request with a manager's support attached gets escalated to a different approver than a verbal ask at your desk.
What the new employer will realistically accept
Most companies hiring from large IT services firms already expect a 30 to 60 day notice period and build it into their own hiring pipeline timelines. A recruiter asking for a hard 15-day join date without flexibility is unusual, not standard — it is fair to push back and ask what flexibility exists before you assume you must make the impossible happen.
If a buyout plus a two-week handover still leaves a gap, most recruiters will move the start date rather than lose a candidate at the final stage. Ask the question directly instead of assuming the deadline is fixed.
Track this like the multi-week process it actually is
A notice period negotiation touches your resignation letter, your buyout request, your handover checklist, and your new offer's joining date — all moving at once, all with different owners.
